Understanding Rheumatoid Arthritis Treatment
What is Rheumatoid Arthritis?
Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a chronic autoimmune condition that primarily affects the joints, causing inflammation, pain, and swelling. Unlike osteoarthritis, which is caused by wear and tear, rheumatoid arthritis occurs when the body's immune system mistakenly attacks its own joint tissues. Over time, this inflammation can lead to joint damage, deformities, and loss of function. RA often affects multiple joints, including the hands, wrists, knees, and feet, and can also impact other organs like the lungs, heart, and eyes.
What are the symptoms of Rheumatoid Arthritis?
- Joint pain and swelling, particularly in the small joints of the hands, wrists, and feet.
- Morning stiffness lasting more than 30 minutes or throughout the day.
- Fatigue and a general feeling of being unwell, often accompanied by low-grade fever.
- Symmetrical symptoms, meaning both sides of the body are often affected at the same time (e.g., both hands or both knees).
- Joint deformities and loss of mobility in more advanced stages.
What causes Rheumatoid Arthritis?
- Autoimmune response: RA is caused by an abnormal immune response that leads the body to attack its own joints.
- Genetic predisposition: Certain genes, particularly the HLA-DRB1 gene, increase susceptibility to developing RA.
- Environmental factors such as smoking, exposure to pollutants, or certain infections may trigger the onset of RA in genetically predisposed individuals.
- Hormonal factors: RA is more common in women, possibly due to the role hormones like estrogen play in immune regulation.
Common Risk Factors for Rheumatoid Arthritis
- Gender: Women are two to three times more likely to develop rheumatoid arthritis than men.
- Age: RA typically develops between the ages of 30 and 60, but it can occur at any age.
- Genetics: A family history of RA increases the risk of developing the disease.
- Smoking: Smoking is a well-known risk factor and can worsen the severity of RA symptoms.
- Obesity: Being overweight or obese increases the risk of developing RA, especially in women under the age of 55.
Why is timely Rheumatoid Arthritis Rehabilitation Important?
Early rheumatoid arthritis rehabilitation is crucial to prevent any pains you currently suffer from becoming chronic (long-term). The longer you avoid rheumatoid arthritis rehabilitation, the longer your pain can be around.
Early rheumatoid arthritis treatment also maximises the effectiveness of any therapies used. This can significantly speed up and improve your recovery and reduce the need for more invasive treatments.
A lost benefit of these quicker recovery times from starting your rheumatoid arthritis rehab is that you can potentially reduce future financial costs. You won’t need as many treatment sessions or potential scans and medications. This financial benefit further underscores the importance of early rheumatoid arthritis rehabilitation.
The sooner you start, the more effective your rheumatoid arthritis rehabilitation will be.
