Understanding Tendonitis Treatment

What is Tendonitis?

Tendonitis is the inflammation or irritation of a tendon, the thick fibrous cords that attach muscles to bones. It typically occurs in areas where tendons are used frequently, such as the shoulders, elbows, wrists, knees, and heels. Tendonitis is often a result of repetitive strain or overuse, leading to pain and tenderness in the affected area. Common types of tendonitis include tennis elbow, golfer’s elbow, and Achilles tendonitis.

What are the symptoms of Tendonitis?

  • Localized pain at the site of the tendon, which may worsen with movement.
  • Stiffness in the affected joint, especially in the morning or after periods of inactivity.
  • Swelling and tenderness around the inflamed tendon.
  • A crackling sensation or feeling of grating when moving the joint.
  • In more severe cases, there may be visible redness and heat around the tendon.

What causes Tendonitis?

  • Repetitive movements, such as frequent typing, sports activities, or manual labor, can strain tendons over time.
  • Sudden increase in physical activity or intensity without proper conditioning or warm-up.
  • Improper posture or body mechanics during activities, leading to undue stress on tendons.
  • Age-related degeneration of the tendons, as tendons lose elasticity and become more prone to injury with age.
  • Trauma or injury to the tendon, such as a direct blow or twist, can lead to inflammation.

Common Risk Factors for Tendonitis

  • Age: Tendon elasticity decreases with age, making older adults more susceptible to tendonitis.
  • Occupation: Jobs that require repetitive movements, such as carpentry, painting, or working on an assembly line, increase the risk of tendonitis.
  • Sports participation: Athletes involved in high-impact or repetitive-motion sports, such as tennis, baseball, or running, are at higher risk.
  • Pre-existing conditions: Conditions such as diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis, or obesity can increase susceptibility to tendon injuries.
  • Improper technique: Using incorrect form during physical activities, such as weightlifting or sports, places added strain on tendons.

Why is timely Tendonitis Rehabilitation Important?

Early tendonitis rehabilitation is crucial to prevent any pains you currently suffer from becoming chronic (long-term). The longer you avoid tendonitis rehabilitation, the longer your pain can be around.

Early tendonitis treatment also maximises the effectiveness of any therapies used. This can significantly speed up and improve your recovery and reduce the need for more invasive treatments.

A lost benefit of these quicker recovery times from starting your tendonitis rehab is that you can potentially reduce future financial costs. You won’t need as many treatment sessions or potential scans and medications. This financial benefit further underscores the importance of early tendonitis rehabilitation.

The sooner you start, the more effective your tendonitis rehabilitation will be.
