Achilles Tendinitis Success Stories from Our South London Physio Clients

Understanding Achilles Tendinitis Treatment
What is Achilles Tendinitis?
Achilles tendinitis is a condition characterized by inflammation of the Achilles tendon, which connects the calf muscles to the heel bone. This inflammation often results from overuse or strain, particularly in athletes or individuals who engage in repetitive activities like running or jumping. The condition can cause pain, stiffness, and swelling in the back of the heel or lower leg.
What are the symptoms of Achilles Tendinitis?
- Gradual pain in the back of the heel, especially after physical activity
- Stiffness or tenderness in the Achilles tendon, typically worse in the morning
- Swelling around the Achilles tendon or heel
- Limited range of motion in the ankle due to discomfort
- Thickening of the Achilles tendon
What causes Achilles Tendinitis?
- Overuse: Repetitive or intense physical activity, such as running or jumping, places excessive stress on the tendon
- Sudden increase in activity: Rapidly increasing exercise intensity or duration without proper conditioning
- Tight calf muscles: Limited flexibility in the calf muscles can put additional strain on the Achilles tendon
- Improper footwear: Wearing shoes without adequate heel support or cushioning can contribute to the condition
- Bone spurs: Extra bone growth where the Achilles tendon attaches to the heel bone can cause irritation
Common Risk Factors for Achilles Tendinitis
- Age: More common in individuals aged 30-50, as tendons lose flexibility with age
- Sports participation: Activities like running, basketball, or tennis increase the risk due to repetitive stress
- Foot mechanics: Flat feet or high arches can place extra strain on the Achilles tendon
- Sudden physical changes: A rapid increase in physical activity or intensity without proper conditioning
- Obesity: Excess body weight adds pressure to the Achilles tendon, especially during walking or running
Why is timely Achilles Tendinitis Rehabilitation Important?
Early achilles tendinitis rehabilitation is crucial to prevent any pains you currently suffer from becoming chronic (long-term). The longer you avoid achilles tendinitis rehabilitation, the longer your pain can be around.
Early achilles tendinitis treatment also maximises the effectiveness of any therapies used. This can significantly speed up and improve your recovery and reduce the need for more invasive treatments.
A lost benefit of these quicker recovery times from starting your achilles tendinitis rehab is that you can potentially reduce future financial costs. You won’t need as many treatment sessions or potential scans and medications. This financial benefit further underscores the importance of early achilles tendinitis rehabilitation.
The sooner you start, the more effective your achilles tendinitis rehabilitation will be.
