Understanding Sacroiliac Joint Pain Treatment

What is Sacroiliac Joint Pain?

Sacroiliac joint pain refers to discomfort or pain that arises from the sacroiliac (SI) joint, which connects the sacrum at the base of the spine to the iliac bones of the pelvis. This pain is typically felt in the lower back, buttocks, or upper legs and is often associated with inflammation or dysfunction of the joint. The condition can result from either too much or too little movement in the joint.

What are the symptoms of Sacroiliac Joint Pain?

  • Lower back pain, particularly on one side, often radiating to the buttocks or thighs
  • Stiffness or a feeling of instability in the pelvis or lower back
  • Worsening pain with prolonged standing, walking, or climbing stairs
  • Pain when getting up from a seated position
  • Tenderness over the SI joint area, especially when pressed

What causes Sacroiliac Joint Pain?

  • Trauma or injury: Direct injury to the sacroiliac joint from falls, accidents, or impact
  • Pregnancy: Hormonal changes during pregnancy can loosen the SI joint, leading to pain
  • Inflammatory conditions: Disorders like ankylosing spondylitis can cause inflammation in the SI joint
  • Osteoarthritis: Age-related wear and tear of the sacroiliac joint cartilage
  • Uneven leg length: Differences in leg length can alter movement mechanics, leading to SI joint dysfunction

Common Risk Factors for Sacroiliac Joint Pain

  • Age: SI joint pain is more common in older adults due to joint degeneration
  • Pregnancy: Women are at a higher risk during and after pregnancy due to changes in joint stability
  • Previous lower back injuries: A history of lower back issues or injuries may increase susceptibility
  • High-impact activities: Sports or activities that put repetitive strain on the lower back and pelvis
  • Inflammatory diseases: Conditions like ankylosing spondylitis or rheumatoid arthritis increase the risk of SI joint pain

Why is timely Sacroiliac Joint Pain Rehabilitation Important?

Early sacroiliac joint pain rehabilitation is crucial to prevent any pains you currently suffer from becoming chronic (long-term). The longer you avoid sacroiliac joint pain rehabilitation, the longer your pain can be around.

Early sacroiliac joint pain treatment also maximises the effectiveness of any therapies used. This can significantly speed up and improve your recovery and reduce the need for more invasive treatments.

A lost benefit of these quicker recovery times from starting your sacroiliac joint pain rehab is that you can potentially reduce future financial costs. You won’t need as many treatment sessions or potential scans and medications. This financial benefit further underscores the importance of early sacroiliac joint pain rehabilitation.

The sooner you start, the more effective your sacroiliac joint pain rehabilitation will be.
